The National Health Service
The Caithness, Sutherland and Ross Labour Party, while appreciating budgetary constraints on NHS Highland, inflicted in recent years by the austerity politics of Conservative, Liberal Democrat and SNP led governments, believes, as part of the fifth wealthiest country on earth, it is unfair that the people of Caithness should be subjected to an increasingly substandard health service.
It is impractical and potentially unsafe to expect patients to travel 100 plus miles by road to give birth, or to attend often routine appointments at Raigmore Hospital.
Additionally, while appreciating the expense involved in keeping people in hospital beds, current home care provisions are not of an acceptable standard to deal with the requirements of our ageing local population.
We also believe that our county’s current hospital facilities, while undoubtedly needing upgrading for 21st century health needs, must not be threatened with closure unless there is a firm commitment and political will to appropriately replace and improve the services they provide as soon as possible.
